ABOUT St David's Catholic Secondary School

OUR PHILOSOPHY

MISSION STATEMENT

OUR HISTORY

/  OUR ROOTS

The school was founded in 1970 as St David's Secondary School by the Catholic Church and was run by priests and other lay persons for many years.  It was renamed  St David's Catholic Secondary school in 1994.

As a Catholic school, and, one of only two diocesan, the management of the school holds in high esteem religious instruction for the spiritual development of each student.

Therefore, students as well as teachers are exposed to religious retreats and masses. Religious Education is taught at every level throughout the school.  Devotions are made to Mary each school year during the months of May and October.

The school is situated at the top of a hill in Petite Esperance in the parish of St. David’s.  It is a Co-educational school with a student population of 595.  There are five levels 1-5; each level consists of three forms.  The ages of students range from 11-18.

SDCSS offers a well rounded curriculum. Over 26 subjects including English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, History, Social Studies, Spanish, French, Agriculture Science, Food & Nutrition, Integrated Science, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing, Information Technology, Home Management, Art, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Office Administration, Clothing and Textile, Economics and Religious Education are being offered.  Students can choose among 14 co curricular activities namely, Athletics, Football, Netball, Cricket, Basketball, Girl Guides, Scouts, Science Club, Drama Club, Debating Club, Choir, Dance, Music and Drum Core.

The Principal and Staff, shepherd the school under the motto “For God and Country” as well as a mission statement; “to provide for the student in its charge, the Educational opportunity to become well-equipped, well rounded, productive, creative and God fearing citizens, who will see dignity in labour, will appreciate and transmit appropriate attitudes, respect morals, cultural values and traditions and recognize the positive aspects in every human person he or she encounters.”

Academically, we perform creditably, for we average at least 70% each year except for the 64.4% for the year 2005; which we believe is a result of the negative impact of ‘Hurricane Ivan. We are confident however, that with hard work and dedication we can improve our performance.

The school was able to win the Intercol Games successfully over the past eight years in the female division; as well as many secondary school competitions. To date, eleven past students of the school are on athletic scholarships in American universities. Many of our athletes have successfully represented Grenada in ‘Track and Field’, both regionally and abroad.

The cricket team would have won the Secondary School Cricket Competition on numerous occasions; with most of our best players moving on to represent Grenada in the Regional and Windward Island competitions. At present one of our male students is a member of the West Indies Youth Cricket Team prior to having represented Grenada in the regional and Windward Island tournaments.

The Management Team of the school has undergone some minor changes in that we have a new Principal.  We are blessed and fortunate to have the replacement being a staunch Catholic who would have given her service to the school for over 20 years.  We are confident therefore that with God’s guidance we will establish a strong meaningful academic and spiritual, foundation through positive guidance and dedication.
